Urgent Call for Caboolture Mums: Donations Needed to Address Breast Milk Shortage

Mum and bub

Caboolture Hospital, along with other hospitals across Queensland, is facing a critical shortage of donated breast milk, prompting an urgent appeal from Australian Red Cross Lifeblood for more donors to alleviate the shortage.

Recent reports have highlighted that the supply of donated breast milk in Queensland has dwindled to less than two weeks’ worth, placing hospitals in Caboolture and neighbouring areas in a dire situation. Premature and low birth-weight babies rely heavily on breast milk for their growth and development, making this shortage particularly alarming for their well-being. While no babies are currently going without, efforts are underway to redistribute milk to ensure hospitals receive an adequate supply.

Residents of Caboolture who are able to donate breast milk are urged to contribute more than three litres of frozen or expressed milk, which should be less than 10 weeks old. Eligibility criteria and registration procedures can be found on the Lifeblood website.
