If you’re anything like me, you’ll know that one of the easiest ways to save money is to stop paying full price for the products you buy every week.
Both Woolworths and Coles release their new weekly specials on Wednesdays, and I’ve found a simple routine that helps me take advantage of them.
In the Woolworths app, I keep a Watch List of products I regularly buy. Every Wednesday, I check whether any of those items are on special. If they are, and they’re non-perishable, I stock up. The Coles app has a similar feature called Lists, which works much the same way.
One thing I’ve noticed is that the two supermarkets often alternate their specials. If your favourite coffee isn’t discounted at Woolworths this week, there’s a good chance Coles will have it on sale soon, and vice versa. A little patience can save a surprising amount over the course of a year.
Smarter Ways to Compare and Track Your Savings
Another feature I love is the ability to sort products by lowest unit price. Rather than comparing the shelf price, compare the price per 100g, 100ml or unit. Sometimes the larger pack really is better value, but not always. This simple comparison helps you avoid being fooled by different pack sizes.
Finally, consider keeping a simple spreadsheet with just three columns: Product, Normal Price and Buy At. Before long, you’ll know exactly what a genuine bargain looks like instead of relying on the supermarket’s “Special” signs.
Those small savings soon add up, leaving you with more money in your wallet for the things that really matter.
