Here’s your chance to step up to the mission of turning a week without driving your car into a fun family time!
The SnapSendSolve Scavenger Hunt Challenge is an exciting feature of Australia’s inaugural Week Without Driving Challenge taking place from 30 September to 6 October. Other ways of making this week without your car a positive, uplifting experience are exploring your neighbourhood by bike or on foot and discovering what public transport is available (especially as Translink fares are now only 50 cents per journey).
You may be surprised by the advantages of the Week Without Driving Challenge – not only can you save money on fuel, but there are also health benefits of increased physical activity, greater connection to the community and benefits for the environment.
Embrace the Week Without Your Car with the SnapSendSolve Scavenger Hunt Challenge
Founder of Get Around Cabo Carfree and Week Without Driving Challenge host, Wendy Nash, said she was hoping for three outcomes from the challenge.
“Firstly, I’d like people to understand what it’s like when you don’t drive,” Wendy said. “What is it like to have to ask other people for a lift? How do you find the bus stop? Where are the safe bike paths?
“You don’t know what it’s like without a car until you live it. It can be very isolating and makes it tough to do pretty much everything. By building empathy and understanding, I’m hoping people help each other more and things like bus services are improved.
“Secondly, I hope people discover more people and places in their neighbourhood. For instance, I go for a bike ride around my neighbourhood, to the markets, to the gym and I’ve made friends and acquaintances that help me feel connected to the community. I also notice beautiful local parks.
“Thirdly, it’s a chance to make your neighbourhood safer and more accessible for everyone by noticing and reporting issues that hinder car-free travel. The Scavenger Hunt is a fun way to increase repair requests for damaged footpaths, park equipment and ramps.”
