The popular Abbey Medieval Festival is returning to Abbeystowe for a jam-packed weekend of old-fashioned fun.

Hosted by the Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology on 12 and 13 July, Abbeystowe in Caboolture will be transformed into a magical place where the Middle Ages thrived from 600 to 1600 AD.

Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology Marketing Manager Kellee Neville said the team listened to last year’s feedback and are excited to see the return of some popular activities.

“We’re excited to feature the return of the trebuchet this year, which is a fantastic spectacle for all to see at the festival, as it fires across the field towards the castle,” Kellee said.

“We’re also bringing back the Friday Family Fun Day (on 11 July), a sensory-friendly day featuring smaller crowd capacity, a new ‘treasure hunt’ activity exclusive to Friday, and reduced sensory triggers.

“This day is an affordable ‘taste’ of the festival for anyone wondering what the festival offers or just wants to enjoy a quieter day to browse the encampments and markets or rest and recharge at the Stag Inn.”

Tournaments, Trebuchets, and All Things Medieval

Not only will the Friday Family Fun Day and trebuchet return this year, but so will a variety of activities, workshops and next-level entertainment.

“The Moreton Bay Medieval Joust Championship (will return and) is a unique spectacle of chivalry and skill, with armoured men and women on horseback charging down the list as the crowd cheers on their champions,” Kellee said.

Visitors can explore five performance arenas, which showcase talented re-enactors demonstrating a diverse range of pursuits, including weaponry, cannon fire, combat, historical battles, dancing and Turkish Oil Wrestling.

To kick off the medieval mayhem leading up to the festival, the Abbeystowe Challenger Clash will also be returning from 7 to 8 June.

“Building on the love of this event, we’re hosting an exclusive two-day internationally-recognised official sporting tournament, with teams from Australia and New Zealand competing to take out the Challenger Clash Cup AND, for the first time ever, the Trans-Tasman Cup,” Kellee said.
