Are you thinking of making the move into your ‘forever home’ – the place where you plan on seeing out your days?

Much thought is needed when choosing the perfect home and location – maybe nearer children and grandchildren, close to medical assistance and with less house and yard to maintain.

Downsizing can also put some cash back in your pocket, as well as lower your ongoing costs such as insurance, electricity, water and council rates – a great benefit.

But how do you go about it? How do you transition smoothly from one home to a more suitable place to grow older?

Expert Tips for a Smooth Downsizing Transition

New Kallangur resident, Margaret, said decluttering early and working with a buyer’s agent made her recent downsizing move so much easier.

“You have to decide what to keep, what to sell, what to give to family and what to get rid of,” Margaret said. “Have conversations now with family so you don’t have to decide under pressure.

“I’m a full-time carer and am ageing myself so there was a lot to consider about what I needed in a new place. Working with my buyer’s agent, Lauren Jones, made the process much easier. I tried for three months to do everything myself but every time I found a new place, it either sold or the price went up before I could investigate. But Lauren took all the angst out and made sure I bought the right property at a good price.”

Lauren Jones, Principal of Lauren Jones Buyers Agency, said it was very important not to wait until you HAD to move.

“Don’t wait for the home to become a hazard,” Lauren said. “Rushing your purchase and sale may mean overpaying to buy and being forced to sell your own home cheaply.

“Buying and selling at the same time can be tricky, but a buyers agent will ensure you don’t overpay and check for any possible problems that could cause issues or cost extra expense down the track.”

Downsizing to your ‘forever home’ is a big deal, but with some preparation and good advice, it can be a smooth transition towards many years of happiness.
