Hollywood’s night of nights, the Academy Awards, is fast approaching, and it can sometimes be hard to work out which feature will take home the coveted Best Picture Oscar. Well, I’ve compiled a list of my top picks for the movie that could be taking home a little golden man.
Anora
Although snubbed at the Golden Globes, which is often a good gauge of how a film will fare at the Oscars, Anora is definitely a fan favourite. Despite including a cast of relative unknowns, writer and director Sean Baker has woven a beautiful tale of an escort who falls in love with a Russian oligarch – what could go wrong?
Still available in select cinemas.
The Brutalist
Starring Adrien Brody, Felicity Jones and Guy Pearce.
Brody is looking to bag a second Oscar for his portrait of an architect, pursuing the American dream in post-World War II New York. However, their lives are changed when they become involved with a mysterious client.
Available in select cinemas.
A Complete Unknown
The Oscars always love a good biopic and although Bob Dylan’s life has been portrayed many times, by many people (including Cate Blanchett), Timothée Chalamet takes a crack at channelling the mumbling muso during his early years.
Available in select cinemas.
Wicked
The Wizard of Oz musical prequel had people singing in the aisles. While not a fan of musicals myself, I still found the tale of witches before they met Dorothy fun, although sickly sweet at times. I’ll riot if it doesn’t win for Best Production Design, as the practical sets were outstanding. This is only part one of a two-part tale, but it still feels like a complete movie.
Available to rent or buy on Prime Video and screening in select cinemas.
The Conclave
A new Pope must be chosen, but Ralph Fiennes gets more than he bargained for when a conspiracy is uncovered that could shake the very foundations of the church. Definitely one to watch out for, especially in the acting categories.
Available in select cinemas.
Check out the 97th Academy Awards on 3 March, with Conan O’Brien as host.
