Passionate about local heritage? The Moreton Bay History Seminar offers a day filled with insightful talks and stories, celebrating the area’s history and culture.

The free seminar will be held on Thursday, 8 May, at the Morayfield Sport and Events Centre.

City of Moreton Bay Mayor Peter Flannery said “understanding our history helps us appreciate where we come from and shapes the way we move forward”.

“Now in its eighth year, the History Seminar celebrates the unique stories and milestones of the City of Moreton Bay, which continues to grow from strength to strength,” Mayor Flannery said.

This year’s seminar will feature several keynote speakers, including suffragist and author, Dr Deborah Jordan, who will discuss Leontine Cooper (1839-1903), a prominent figure in the women’s suffrage movement.

“Historians seek to explain and understand change,” Dr Jordan said.

“Through the wonderful writings of Leontine Cooper who lived and worked in the Moreton Bay district, we have a prism onto its wider history. Even more when she advocated women’s rights to vote, we can see the changing structures of people’s lives in Queensland.”

Local Voices, Untold Stories

Journalist Julie Thomson will speak with her co-author and friend Julie Kaeser on the hidden histories of Caboolture’s women.

“I found discovering the backstories of the women who carved out a life, raised their families, grew businesses and nourished the Moreton Bay regional community, an important tool in understanding the unique character of the area,” Ms Thomson said. “The area is very different now, so their stories are an important slice of history not captured in archives.”

Environmental scientist and architectural photographer Dr Paul Dielemans will also discuss modern inter-war bathing pavilions on the Redcliffe Peninsula.

Additionally, there will be lightning talks from Lynne Hooper of Bribie Island Historical Society and Sue Battersby from Caboolture Family History Research Group.

Ms Hooper said the Bribie Island Historical Society proudly supported the seminar “because it gives us the opportunity to learn, network and celebrate our shared heritage”.

President of History Redcliffe Janet Franklin said the seminar was a wonderful opportunity for small groups to network and promote local history.

“The speakers are always interesting, informative and stimulating,” she said. “It feels great to be in a large room with like-minded individuals.”
