City of Moreton Bay residents have delivered a standout year for reading, borrowing and digital downloads, with more than 2.3 million items borrowed across the City’s library network in the past 12 months.

Mayor Peter Flannery said that libraries in City of Moreton Bay were thriving.

“We lent 2.3 million books to our community over the past year, a substantial 7.5% increase from two years ago, proving our book lovers are showing no signs of slowing down,” Mayor Flannery said.

A significant portion of the growth has occurred online, with nearly 800,000 digital items downloaded over the year. Digital borrowing has increased by 28 per cent over the past two years, reflecting strong demand for eBooks, eMagazines and eAudiobooks.

“Our library app has seen strong engagement, being used 1.4 million times since its launch in 2020, with almost half a million of those in the past 12 months alone,” Mayor Flannery said.

Borrowing data shows mystery and thriller novels remain firm favourites, with Lee Child’s In Too Deep topping the list of most borrowed physical books.

North Lakes Library recorded the highest number of loans, exceeding 300,000 items, followed by Redcliffe and Arana Hills libraries.

Seasonal trends also emerged, with summer the busiest period for physical borrowing, while winter saw a rise in digital reading.

Summer Reading Club and Most-Borrowed Titles Revealed

The popular Summer Reading Club will continue through to the end of January. Free to join, the program encourages families to track their reading time across the summer school holiday period, with both physical and digital reading counting towards prize draws. Participants can log everything from library books and eBooks to audiobooks, magazines and Storytime sessions, with prizes including book vouchers for children and adults drawn in early February. Readers can also support their school by nominating it when they join, with trophies awarded to schools with the strongest participation.

“It’s a brilliant way for families to keep young minds active over the holidays, track their reading, and go in the draw for weekly prizes including book vouchers,” Mayor Flannery said.
