Welcome in the Year of the Fire Horse as City of Moreton Bay lights up Caboolture Town Square with exciting and colourful Lunar New Year festivities!

The free, family-friendly event on Saturday, 14 February, celebrates the Lunar New Year with entertainment and activities from locally-represented cultures, delicious food across a range of cuisines, and most of all, a spirit of community.

City of Moreton Bay Mayor Peter Flannery said Lunar New Year was a special time to recognise and celebrate the cultures that help shape our City.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity for our community to come together, share traditions and learn from one another,” Mayor Flannery said.

Performances, Traditions and the Year of the Fire Horse

Festivities include lion dances and dragon dances, live cultural performances, interactive workshops, roving entertainment and a variety of children’s activities, including crafts. Attendees will have the opportunity to pick up some martial arts moves, learn the graceful steps and hand motions of Japanese dance, or hone their skills at Diabolo, also known as Chinese Yo-Yo.

RJ Ari, a popular radio host, will return as the MC for the festival, as traditional dance groups, musicians and other entertainment take to the stage. Performers include Splendid Taiwan, Queensland Guangxi Multicultural Communities, Queensland Chinese Community Inc, Peranya (Thai Music Australia), traditional Japanese dance act Tensui Australia, and Red Dragon Martial Arts.

Manager of Red Dragon Martial Arts, Brett Fenton, said they were looking forward to performing again at the Moreton Bay Lunar Festival.

“It’s the highlight of the year for us, as we get to showcase a lot of our performance skills, including Traditional Lion Dance, Dragon Dance, Martial Arts Demos and finishing the night with our LED Lion Dance,” Brett said.

“We have been lucky enough to be involved in every Moreton Bay Lunar Festival since it started.”

The Year of the Fire Horse starts with the Chinese New Year on 17 February and runs until 5 February 2027 in the lunar calendar. The Fire Horse symbolises dynamic energy, freedom, passion, and transformation. Fire intensifies the horse’s natural traits, bringing about bold action, creativity, growth, optimism and opportunity.
