Have you often thought it would be great to get the kids off their electronic devices, and into the great outdoors?

Consider taking them along to a local Scout group!

Scouts Australia provides fun youth development activities, building resilient and confident boys and girls aged 5 to 25 in various Scouting sections. They also welcome adult volunteer Scout Leaders and have opportunities for the whole family to be involved. Everyone is welcome, it’s very inclusive, and diversity is valued. And the kids love it!

Group Leader – Caboolture Scout Group, Dr Sylvia Starkey (affectionately known as ‘Doc’) said she became involved with the Scout movement because it teaches kids to be the best version of themselves.

“My son was in Scouts and progressed to being a Queen Scout which is as high as you can go, so I saw what the Scout movement did for him,” Sylvia said.

“Then three years ago, life changed and I had time back. I wanted to do something purposeful so I became a Joey Leader and am now Scout Group Leader.

“It’s a great way to give back to the community. The Scouts participate in community events like ANZAC Day every year and have their own events like Jamboree and Raftarama.

Exciting Scout Events: Jamboree & Raftarama

“Jamboree was recently in Maryborough and even kids in wheelchairs took part in things like abseiling.”

Jamboree 2025 was the adventure of a lifetime for many and included a concert by Amy Shark, ziplining, going to Australia Zoo, riding motorised eskies, and laser tag, among other activities available.

Raftarama is a competition for Scouts across the Districts of Caboolture, Burpengary, Narangba and Morayfield. The teams compete for best constructed raft, best flag and race winner. Younger Scouts i.e. Cubs and Joeys, experience canoe rides on Caboolture River and several land-based activities.

Sylvia said the Scouts construct their raft on the day.

“Each team is given plastic barrels, poles, and rope to build their vessel in just two hours,” she said. “It’s all about teamwork and co-operation as well as honouring traditional skills like knotting.”

The Scouts motto is ‘Be Prepared’ – and they help prepare kids for a better life.
