Looking to leave your everyday cares behind and dive into an action-packed medieval/fantasy world?
If you are a fan of online role-playing games such as Dungeons and Dragons, love The Lord of the Rings, or are sick of boring Friday nights, then the newly launched Haven Larp (live action role play) at Elimbah may offer the perfect diversion.
Founders of Haven Larp, Josiah and Kaylah Plummer, said the start of Haven Larp, and their own love story, was at Morayfield Gametraders many years ago.
“Gametraders launched at Larp – that’s where we met – but that ended up closing down and we realised the closest one was on the south side of Brisbane,” Kaylah said. “So we decided to open one here.
“It’s taken a while to set up – we launched in May with a big opening night of 70 to 80 people. Our regular Friday nights have 20 to 25 people and we would love to welcome more.”
Haven Larp players form teams known as Guilds and compete in quests. Every week, players are given a different opening scenario and develop the story as their character, while engaging in different games, for example, capturing the flag or collecting certain items.
Kaylah said that you don’t need a costume, but it’s fun to dress up.
“As well as medieval characters, we have had pirates, fairies, elves, Vikings and orcs,” she said. “We just want people to have fun with their character and the story.
“Nerds, Dungeons and Dragon players, etc, love it – it’s a great escape and builds friendships and community.
“Sometimes this world sucks so it is great to create another one.”
While warrior types will enjoy using replica weapons, including swords (with rules for safety), there are also non-combatant roles for those gentler at heart, such as healers and poets.
Getting Involved
Come and find a new place to belong on Friday nights from 6.30pm to 9pm. Cost is $13 plus $5 for weapon hire (if needed). Players must be over 18, and are welcome to spectate for free on their first visit.
