For 15-year-old Mia Muller, joining the Morayfield Venturer Scouts has been nothing short of life-changing.
Aimed at young people aged 14 to 17, the Venturer program offers more than traditional scouting; it’s a youth-led experience where members shape their own journey.
“What sets us apart is that Venturers get to pick our adventures and plan what we want to do,” Mia said. “It’s our journey, with leaders there to support us.
“We participate in a wide array of activities, from traditional scouting activities like camping and bushcraft to challenges like abseiling, overnight hiking, snorkelling, rafting, canoeing and sailing.”
Beyond adventure, the program also aims to help young people build valuable life skills. Leadership, teamwork and responsibility are all part of the experience, with Venturers encouraged to take ownership of their activities and contribute to the wider community.
Adventures, Leadership and Community Impact Through Venturer Scouts
Morayfield Venturer Scouts are also actively involved in initiatives like Clean Up Australia Day and Plant a Tree Day. They also support younger scout units, with members volunteering their time as mentors and role models, an experience Mia said was both rewarding and empowering. Mia herself joined the group in May last year, after spending six years in Girl Guides.
“I wanted a change and to try new things, not just with my group but in my community,” she said. “It’s safe to say becoming a Venturer was one of the best things I’ve ever done.”
Since joining, Mia said she had discovered new passions, built strong friendships and even stepped outside her comfort zone, learning, for example, that heights aren’t her favourite thing. She has also been accepted into the Queensland Branch Youth Council, giving her the opportunity to share her ideas at a state level.
“Scouts is the one place I don’t feel judged,” she said. “I can just be myself and have fun. Without scouts, I know I wouldn’t be who I am today. I am my best me, because of scouts.”
Based in Morayfield (26/13-38 Caboolture River Road), the scout group has been part of the community for more than 40 years and continues to grow.
“Being part of this amazing group is an invaluable experience for young people seeking a supportive and adventurous group,” Mia said. “I believe everyone deserves to have people around them who will support them no matter what and help them achieve what they want to.”
Venturer meetings run on Friday nights, alongside the younger scout section, with plans to return to a separate night in the future.
The group is always on the lookout for new members ready to take on challenges, make friends and try something new. For further information, contact Morayfield Scout Group via Facebook or email hello@scoutsqld.com.au
