This year, it’s all about dancing, not trophies, as the Queensland Ultimate Challenge is reimagined as the Queensland Ultimate Challenge Camp.
The event will be held at the Morayfield Sport and Events Centre on Sunday, 8 November.
Organiser Natalie Perry said the event would include a full day of dancing and performance, featuring ballroom, Latin American and new vogue rounds, workshops, professional feedback, social dancing and practice.
“This year, we have reimagined it as the Queensland Ultimate Challenge Camp, an immersive dance and performance experience designed to give dancers of different ages and levels the opportunity to perform, receive professional feedback, participate in workshops and enjoy a full day of dancing,” she said.
Unlike a traditional competition, there will be no placings, winners or prizes. Instead, dancers will receive constructive observations from an experienced performance review panel, covering presentation, floorcraft, musicality, partnership and performance preparation.
“It’s important to us that the feedback complements the work dancers are already doing with their own teachers and coaches,” Natalie said.
“The performance review panel isn’t there to change choreography or replace anyone’s coach. They’re there to provide another perspective.”
A New Approach to Dance and Performance
For Dasha Vinokour, who is dancing with her brother David, the opportunity to perform and receive professional feedback is a major attraction.
“We think it is super unique for us to receive in-depth professional feedback that allows us to improve our dancing almost immediately,” she said.
Dasha and David compete in Latin dancing, which she describes as both creative and athletic.
“For us, Latin dancing is the perfect blend of art and sport,” she said. “When the music comes on, you just let the rhythm take you away.”
She believes the event will appeal to spectators, describing live DanceSport as an “electrifying atmosphere”.
“You not only meet incredible people but build valuable friendships and connections, which we think is very rare to come by these days,” she said.
Participants are from Moreton Bay, Brisbane and other parts of Queensland.
Natalie said Come & Try Dancing sessions are also being considered for members of the public, alongside social dancing opportunities.
Food and drinks will be available from the café at Morayfield Sports & Events Centre.
