When it comes to bringing smiles to the faces of kids going through treatment this Christmas, there’s one event on the calendar set to make a difference.
It’s a Wing Thing and Leukaemia Support Queensland (LSQ) are gearing up for the 5th Annual Toy Run at Caboolture Showgrounds on 29 November, which also includes a car show.
For LSQ president Jane McMillan, the day is about community spirit, generosity and fun, as well as collecting toys for children spending time in Caboolture Hospital.
“Join us as we ride together to support children and families affected by leukaemia and related blood cancers across Queensland,” she said. “Whether you’re riding, showcasing a car, vending, volunteering or just coming along for the fun, your support helps bring smiles and hope to those who need it most.”
Community, Compassion and Christmas Cheer
Along with the Toy Run, the event will include food trucks, market stalls, live entertainment and a classic and custom car show that will impress any enthusiast. All proceeds and donated toys will go directly to supporting families who are facing the challenges of blood cancers.
The toys will be delivered to Caboolture Hospital in mid-December so they can be handed out as needed when patients come in across the festive season.
“To be able to give a little bit to those that need it the most is quite rewarding,” Jane said. “To know what they are going through with treatment and the unknown of where their journey will take them, to bring a little bit of happiness into a child’s life is worth all the hard work we put in behind the scenes.”
With another nine new patients seeking their support and assistance in the last two months, Jane said it was more important than ever for LSQ to keep doing what they do.
“I don’t have to do this, I want to do this and I’m not the only one,” she said. “When I say I, I mean we, everyone who is part of LSQ.
“It makes you feel good that you have helped somebody, whether it’s a child, an 80-year-old or somebody coming towards the end of life and you have made their last days feel better.
“You give them some hope. If you can put a smile on someone’s face and make their day seem a little brighter when they’re going through the worst time of their life, what’s the harm in doing that?”
LSQ is also seeking sponsors, vendors and volunteers to help make this year’s Toy Run the biggest and best yet. Contact Jane on 0422 584 080.
