What began as a pretty field of sunflowers has grown into one of the region’s most beloved Halloween destinations, where pumpkins set the tone for seasonal fun.
Wamuran farm owners Corey Damiani and Taylah Scott-Buchanan first opened their land to the public with a simple idea sparked by an abundance of blooms.
“We had so many flowers and we started to sell them off, then we got thinking,” Taylah said.
“Halloween itself and the pumpkins are always so limited in Australia, so we gave it a go and have been expanding since.”
Creating a pumpkin patch isn’t just about planting seeds, it’s a months-long labour of love.
“There’s a lot of prep work put into place; we start the pumpkins three months prior to October with the seed in the ground and then decorations,” Taylah said. “This’ll be our third year and we can’t wait to keep going.”
The patch has quickly become a seasonal highlight, drawing visitors from across the region.
“Not only are people coming all the way from ACT to see our more unique pumpkins, but the locals absolutely love being able to drive past a colourful field and having something fun to check out so close to home,” Taylah said.
The Perfect Pumpkin and Tips for Carving
For many, the magic lies in choosing the perfect pumpkin.
“Picking out your own pumpkin allows you to know exactly how fresh it is, as well as getting to pick out the most bizarre or perfect looking pumpkin – from the curly stem to the warty texture,” Taylah said.
This year, there will be more variety of pumpkins, painting stations, a mini corn maze, and of course, more lollies.
Open daily from 10 October to Halloween on 31 October, the patch promises festive fun for all.
Taylah’s carving tip: “Use a water-based marker, draw out our design, carve, then clean any remaining marker left with water,” she said.
“Also, to extend the life of the pumpkin once carved, apply Vaseline to the now exposed flesh to slow down the rotting process, and also try to avoid long periods in the sun.”
