Traditional lion and dragon dancing lessons are available at Red Dragon Martial Arts in Caboolture.
The free weekly lessons are offered to anyone aged seven and older and take place every Saturday at 10.30am at the studio’s headquarters.
Sifu Brett Fenton, head instructor of Red Dragon Martial Arts, has been teaching lion and dragon dancing for over 30 years.
“Lion and dragon dancing bring good luck and ward off evil spirits in Chinese culture,” he said.
“Once the students have a basic level of skill in these classes, they may get the opportunity to perform at the numerous opportunities we get each year.
“Our advanced students get to perform at festivals and corporate gigs. We teach all skill levels and don’t limit the class size.”
Learn Traditional Dance and Musical Performance Skills
For those who want to get involved but don’t fancy actually being in the lion or dragon, they can learn Chinese instruments instead.
“Lion and dragon dancing can be quite physical, so those not interested can learn instruments like the drum, cymbals and gong,” Brett said.
“The styles we teach are Fat San and Hok San style lion dancing, as well as traditional dragon dancing. All are southern Chinese styles.”
