When medical research is connected to the community, the result is better outcomes for local families.
The Common Good invests in research aimed at solving some of the most urgent health challenges, supporting researchers looking to improve treatments for heart and lung diseases and conditions associated with mental health and ageing. Their partnerships with world-class clinical and allied health professionals ensure their efforts lead to meaningful medical breakthroughs that benefit thousands of Australians.
The Common Good, an initiative of The Prince Charles Hospital Foundation, recently held their Research Showcase at Caboolture Hospital, where five research grants were awarded, totalling more than $248,000 in support of innovative projects that address the health needs of our growing community.
Congratulations to Associate Professor Mahesh Ramanan and team, and Associate Professor Thuy Frakking and team, for receiving Caboolture Research Grants; to Ms Emma Williams for a PhD Scholarship; and to Dr Jacqui Peet and team, and Dr Apil Gurung and team, for receiving CKW-UniSc Collaborative Grants.
Dr Rebekah Engel, Research and Impact Manager at The Prince Charles Hospital Foundation said these investments represent far more than research funding.
“They create opportunities to ask important questions, generate new evidence, and translate discoveries into better care for the community,” said Dr Engel.
“Just as importantly, they are helping to build research capability at Caboolture Hospital, ensuring our clinicians have the support to pursue research alongside the exceptional care they provide every day.”
Child Life Therapy Improving Care for Local Families
One of the most impactful initiatives of The Common Good to local families is the funding of Lucy, Caboolture Hospital’s inaugural Child Life Therapist. Lucy spoke at the Research Showcase and said research relating to her role at Caboolture Hospital will investigate the influence of Child Life Therapy on sedation rates, caregiver experiences, child distress and healthcare outcomes.
“When a child is anxious, the whole family feels it. My role is to support both parents and children – to explain what’s happening, help them feel calmer and give them strategies that make the experience less overwhelming,” said Lucy.
“Sometimes it’s as simple as using a doll to show what will happen or slowing down and giving a child time to breathe. Those small moments make a huge difference.”
