A global citizen science event returns this month to help document the wide range of biodiversity in the Moreton Bay area.
The Great Southern Bioblitz (GSB) will take place from Friday, 27 November to Monday, 30 November across Moreton Bay and it’s free to participate.
President of Rotary Redcliffe Sunrise, Colin Scobie, said the event is the perfect excuse to experience nature.
“(The GSB) offers families across Moreton Bay and beyond the perfect excuse to step outdoors and discover the remarkable diversity of life on their doorstep,” Colin said.
“For families exploring the region’s beaches, waterways and bushland, there is an extraordinary world of fauna and flora waiting to be discovered. Sometimes, you don’t have to look very far.”
This event allows participants to become citizen scientists by signing up for the free app ‘iNaturalist’ and documenting any organisms found in the local area, or beyond.
Discover the Wonders of Local Flora and Fauna
This year, Colin encourages participants to take a walk along the beach and keep a look out for the humble seashell.
“A walk along the beach can become a fascinating introduction to what lies beneath the water,” Colin said.
“Shells come in an amazing variety of shapes, colours and sizes, and each one tells a story about the creature that once lived inside it.
“A magnifying glass can transform a simple beachcombing expedition into an investigation worthy of a young marine biologist. Look closely at the patterns, ridges, openings and textures, and suddenly the beach becomes a natural laboratory.”
A City of Moreton Bay spokesperson said the event was a great way to get involved with environment centres across the region.
“City of Moreton Bay Environment Education Centres encourages residents to make a difference and get involved,” the spokesperson said. “Drop into one of our centres in the lead-up to the Great Southern BioBlitz to uncover local flora and fauna species or for tips on how to use the iNaturalist app.
“The Great Southern BioBlitz is a fantastic opportunity for citizen scientists to collect vital species data in the City of Moreton Bay.”
The community can visit centres in Griffin, Caboolture, and Eatons Hill.
