A vision nearly two years in the making has become a reality for Leukaemia Support Queensland (LSQ), with the opening of a support house offering assistance for those affected by blood cancer.
LSQ president Jane McMillan welcomed supporters, volunteers and community representatives, including Member for Morayfield Mark Ryan and Member for Bancroft Chris Whiting, to the opening on 18 October, recognising everyone who helped bring the special project to life.
“Every person here, and everyone who has contributed along the way, has helped make this vision a reality,” Jane said. “We are incredibly fortunate to live with such a generous and caring community, surrounded by people who believe in our cause and are willing to lend a hand when it is needed.”
Jane said the new support house, named Meg’s Place in honour of a special LSQ volunteer, would provide a place for people to find understanding, connection and support when they needed it most.
Free Family Support, Community Volunteering, and Local Care
“I think we are all becoming increasingly aware of how devastating blood cancer can be. A blood cancer diagnosis doesn’t affect just one person,” Jane said. “It affects families, friends, entire support networks. It can bring emotional stress, financial pressure, changes to relationships, fatigue, and above all, uncertainty about the future. No one should have to face blood cancer alone.”
LSQ provides free support services to those living with blood cancers, as well as their families and friends, helping them navigate challenges including fatigue, mental health, relationships and financial pressures.
Volunteers were given special recognition for their efforts, with Jane thanking the team members who rolled up their sleeves to help with everything from painting and heavy lifting to cleaning, maintenance and sourcing supplies.
The opening of Meg’s Place comes as blood cancer continues to affect thousands of Australians, with Jane highlighting the importance of awareness, community support and ensuring no one feels alone following a diagnosis.
She said the support house represented more than a building, providing a place where people could feel supported and connected.
“After all, there is no better place to be than with family,” she said.
Meg’s Place is located at 115 King St, Caboolture. For further information about Meg’s Place or how you can assist LSQ, contact Jane on 0422 584 080.
