There is something special about finding the perfect outfit.
Maybe it’s a jumper that catches your eye, a handbag or a gift chosen for a loved one. For residents in aged care, however, the opportunity to browse, choose and buy something for themselves can sometimes be out of reach.
That is where Possum Pants Mobile Boutique comes in. Created by friends and nurses Lisa and Jess, the travelling boutique brings clothing, accessories and gifts directly to aged care communities in Southeast Queensland, giving residents the chance to shop independently. The idea began with an Instagram reel.
“Back in May, Lisa sent me an Instagram link showing another mobile boutique in America,” Jess said. “I think we were both looking for something that we could do that was ours, using our skills and passion to create something meaningful.”
Jess said caring for older people had always been about more than their physical needs.
“I was and still am passionate about seeing and understanding the actual person, being inquisitive, finding out their history, their stories, what they love, their opinions, and I guess supporting them with dignity and kindness,” she said.
Possum Pants offers residents the chance to browse clothing, accessories and gifts, touch and feel the products, and make their own choices without having to leave their community.
The Story Behind the Name and What Comes Next
“I hope that the residents that visit our boutique feel a sense of normality, independence and joy,” Lisa said.
They said the response has been positive, with both women enjoying seeing residents shop together, laugh, chat and help each other choose outfits.
Even the unusual name has its own story. After considering names such as The Golden Thread, ClapSmith Closet and Vintage Soul, Possum Pants was chosen.
“I wanted a name that represented being elderly in a positive light – Possum Pants wasn’t really a serious suggestion, but Lisa said she liked it and thought it was fun,” Jess said. “We decided that it felt joyful and memorable and so Possum Pants Mobile Boutique was born!”
Neither have a business background and both admit the venture has been a steep learning curve. But with plans to expand their range, introduce seasonal gifts and visit more regional communities, they said they were excited about what comes next.
“Possum Pants has definitely added something special to my life,” Lisa said. “It’s given me something that’s just my own outside of nursing – something meaningful that I’ve built with a good friend.”
