For Steve Wicks, classic cars are more than a passion – they are a way of life.
The Morayfield local has spent decades surrounded by cars, motorcycles and mechanical projects, but these days much of his time is dedicated to a cause that combines his love of motoring with raising awareness and funds for men’s health.
Steve is hosting the Caboolture leg of The Distinguished Gentleman’s Drive on 27 September, joining hundreds of events held around the world in support of men’s health.
“If you don’t want to drive (although we’d love you to join us), just donate, because the most important aspect of this is to raise money,” Steve said. “So, jump online and you can give a little or a lot for a worthy cause.”
A lifelong motorcyclist, Steve and his wife Cheryl initially joined the motorcycle event The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride in Brisbane back in 2014, dressing up and riding alongside a small group of enthusiasts. The motorcycle event grew significantly over the following years, eventually attracting hundreds of riders. Steve later turned his attention to The Distinguished Gentleman’s Drive, which sees owners of classic cars aged more than 40 years get behind the wheel in their finest attire.
Steve joined the drive six years ago, travelling to Noosa and Brisbane before bringing the event to Caboolture last year. He and Cheryl spent two months planning the route as a scavenger-style drive.
A Personal Connection to Men’s Health
“There is something about getting behind the wheel of an older car, dressed up in your refinery and knowing that so many people both here at home and around the world are doing it at the same time,” Steve said.
Steve’s connection with classic cars stretches well beyond the event. After working on oil rigs, he built rally cars and restored classic Jaguars. His collection includes several rare Borgwards, including a 1959 model inherited from his wife’s family.
Steve’s dedication to the drive is also deeply personal. The event raises money for men’s health, with Movember now the primary beneficiary, supporting causes including prostate cancer awareness and research.
“We lost my nephew to suicide a few years back,” Steve said. “Plus, I’m 67 now, I’m at that age where for many men it’s their prostate causing issues and men being men, we aren’t always great at getting things taken care of!”
And while the event carries the word ‘Gentleman’ in its name, Steve is quick to point out that everyone is welcome.
“It may be called The Distinguished Gentleman’s Drive, but women are more than welcome and we would love to see them on board,” he said.
