There’s a world of wildlife, plants and tiny creatures waiting to be discovered right on our doorstep.
Biodiversity Month will be celebrated across September, with City of Moreton Bay’s environment centres inviting the community to explore local habitats, learn about native species and discover ways to protect them.
City of Moreton Bay Mayor Peter Flannery said the month was a chance to learn about the wildlife found across the region.
“Biodiversity Month is an opportunity to pause and appreciate the incredible natural environment around us, while taking time to connect with nature and learn more about the species that call City of Moreton Bay home,” Mayor Flannery said.
Biodiversity Events Across Moreton Bay This September
The local highlight will be an evening of nocturnal discovery at Caboolture Region Environmental Education Centre (CREEC) in Burpengary on 18 September, where Bugs Ed will invite visitors to try spotlighting and searching for moths, spiders and other invertebrates.
Director of Bugs Ed Michelle Gleeson said every day, a million different critters perform a myriad of ecoservices for us – such as pollinating our plants, nourishing our soil and keeping pests and weeds under control.
“The amazing world of invertebrates is all around us and is vital to our existence – but most of the time, we don’t even realise it’s there!” Michelle said. “Opening people’s eyes to this hidden world is what I enjoy the most.”
Kumbartcho Sanctuary in Eaton’s Hill and Osprey House in Griffin will also host wildlife experiences during the month, featuring native mammals, reptiles and birds.
