The Dellit Family and the Legacy of Riverview Hospital

In the early 1900s, Caboolture was a quiet rural township where medical care was scarce and most serious cases required a long journey to Brisbane. That all changed in 1920, thanks to the determination of a local doctor and a pioneering nurse who saw the need for care closer to home.

Dr Andrew Crawford, a well-respected local physician, recognised the benefits of having a hospital nearby to treat his patients. His solution came through a partnership with Mrs Minnie Dellit, the town’s only trained obstetric nurse. Together, they transformed the Dellit family’s King Street residence into the “Riverview Private Hospital”, a modest building that would become a lifeline for the Caboolture community.

Riverview opened its doors in 1920 as both a general and maternity hospital. Dr Crawford became its first doctor, and Nurse Minnie Dellit served as its first matron, overseeing patient care with compassion and skill. The hospital quickly became a trusted institution, delivering more than 400 babies during its 19 years of operation. For many families in the district, those births marked the first time their children were delivered in a local facility rather than far-off Brisbane.

Before Riverview’s establishment, even minor medical issues often meant days of travel by horse or rail to reach the city. The arrival of the hospital was a turning point, not only improving healthcare access but strengthening community confidence in the growing township.

From Community Lifeline to Living History

In 1939, after nearly two decades of service, Riverview ceased operating as a hospital. Around 1952, the building itself was moved to Burpengary, where it remained a familiar local landmark for thirty years. In 1982, the historic structure found its final resting place at the Caboolture Historical Village, where it stands today as a reminder of Caboolture’s early medical pioneers.

The story of the Dellit family and Riverview Hospital is one of innovation, dedication, and community spirit, showing how two people’s vision reshaped healthcare in Caboolture and left a lasting mark on the region’s history.
