With such gorgeous weather, April is a great time to get out in the garden picking and planting.
April is the perfect month to add citrus trees to your organic garden. Think oranges, lemons, limes, mandarins, tangelos and more unusual species such as Kefir lime, cumquats or Buddha’s Hand. There are even dwarf varieties that grow well in pots – perfect for a small garden or patio.
Not only do citrus fruits have many culinary uses, but the blossoms are pretty with a delightful fragrance that attracts bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects.
Citrus thrive in well-drained soil and love full sun. They are hungry feeders and require a good dose of organic fertiliser at least every season. After citrus trees have finished fruiting, give them a light prune to stay in shape.
As always, mulching is the garden’s best friend – top up where needed to help soil retain moisture and suppress weeds. Organic products such as lucerne or sugar cane are ideal as they break down over time and improve the soil.
Cooler-Season Vegetables and Herbs to Plant
There is still time to plant cooler-season vegetables and herbs, such as broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, carrots, beetroot, silverbeet, spinach, onions, Asian greens (pak choi, tatsoi, mizuna), parsley and dill.
