A vibrant retelling of a classic biblical story will hit the stage at Hercules Road State School in Kippa-Ring this month, thanks to Shine Performing Arts Academy.
The musical, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, follows the journey of Joseph, a young man gifted a colourful coat by his father, Jacob, marking him as the favourite among his 12 sons. Blessed with the ability to interpret dreams, Joseph’s visions of greatness spark jealousy among his brothers, who ultimately sell him into slavery rather than carry out a plan to kill him.
Beyond its dramatic arc, the story’s themes continue to resonate with modern audiences. Its message of hope and perseverance reflects the universal experience of striving for dreams that feel just out of reach, while also touching on relatable family dynamics, including sibling rivalry.
The lead role of Joseph is shared by 18-year-old Jeremy Hales from North Lakes and 19-year-old Lucas Van Stam from Brighton. Both actors expressed enthusiasm about taking on the iconic role. Lucas, who has performed in the show before, described the character of Joseph as “confident and forgiving” and said that he shared the forgiving and accepting traits of the character more than anything else.
“I’m most looking forward to working with a new group of people and getting to play such a fun role,” Lucas said.
Jeremy, who has had a break from acting, said that he felt it was time to try for a big role again, and he was looking forward to being back on stage with his theatre family.
“I share some traits with the character of Joseph,” Jeremy said. “I am a confident person like Joseph and I’m sure my brother hates me sometimes, too.”
A Colourful Community Production with Heart
The role of the narrator will be shared by Julie McCoy and Rachel Albrecht, while another local talent, James Reid, will play Pharaoh.
A standout feature is Joseph’s coat itself, a collaborative creation made from colourful quilt squares contributed by locals of all ages, each piece bearing dreams for the future. Costume team members Shan Michaels, Sarah Hunt, Viv Moss, Lauren Dymond and Abi Ferguson drew inspiration from an idea by Jeni Shaefer of the Virginia Stage Company.
Since opening in January 2024, Burpengary-based training and production company Shine Performing Arts Academy has expanded from two small drama classes to more than 20 productions in just two years.
Paula-Mary Camilleri, the show’s director, said, “We wanted to do a big community production that would include everyone from children to adults, and we pride ourselves on being a great community-minded company, who deliver quality productions with a lot of heart.”
“I’m so blessed to have a great team of people behind me who also wanted a space to create where their efforts were appreciated and valued,” she said.
