The Buckby family were living in Narangba in the late 19th century, during a period when the district was developing as a rural settlement north of Brisbane.
The name Buckby is of English origin, and like many families in the region, their presence in Queensland reflected the movement of settlers to Australia during the second half of the 19th century.
Richard William Buckby, born on 16 November 1856, married Clara Edith Smith, who was born on 12 November 1860. The couple later married in 1877 and established their family in the Narangba district in the years that followed.
By the 1890s, the Buckbys were part of an established household in Narangba. Records indicate the family was large, with at least nine children, and members of the family later maintained connections across the Moreton Bay region, including Caboolture, Petrie and Toorbul.
Family Legacy and Historical Connections
One of their sons, Clarence Norman Buckby, known as Bob, was born on 7 October 1891. He was the seventh child and fifth son of Richard and Clara. He was named after an earlier child, Clarence, who was born in 1887 and died at 18 months of age. He remained part of the family’s long-standing connection to the district until his death on 26 October 1956. Another sibling, Hannah Maud Buckby, was born in 1889 and lived to the age of 105, dying in 1994.
Edwin Audrey Buckby was born at Narangba on 13 February 1896. Known as Mick, he was the ninth child and sixth son of Richard and Clara. As a young adult, he worked as a labourer and was living with his parents when he enlisted for service during World War I, linking the family to the wider events of the time.
Following his return, Edwin married Margaret Catherine Campbell on 28 January 1922. The couple later lived in Petrie and Toorbul, where the family maintained a presence in the region.
Edwin Audrey Buckby died on 13 February 1973 and was buried at Albany Creek Memorial Park.
The Buckby family remains an important part of the area’s history, with members of the family still living in the community today.
