Narangba Valley State High School (NVSHS) has once again hosted a successful Mathematics Tournament, bringing together some of the Metro North region’s most talented mathematics students for a day of academic competition.

Held on 15 May, the annual event welcomed approximately 400 students from Years 7 to 12, representing 26 schools across the region. Led by Melissa Winter, Head of Department – Mathematics at NVSHS, the tournament challenged students through activities designed to test problem-solving, reasoning and teamwork skills.

Melissa said that it was a genuine honour to lead the tournament and provide students across the region with the opportunity to engage in high-level academic competition.

“Events such as these celebrate excellence in mathematics, inspire intellectual curiosity, and encourage our most talented young mathematicians to challenge themselves alongside like-minded peers,” she said.

Competition Highlights and Results

This year’s competition also featured participants from Queensland University of Technology and the University of the Sunshine Coast, who competed alongside Year 11 and 12 students.

Students completed four rounds, including an individual challenge developed by QUT Professor Michael Bode, an industry challenge centred on airport logistics and efficient flight scheduling created by Ben Murphy from Murphy Stone Analytics, a timed team challenge, and a 45-minute relay challenge.

Redcliffe State High School was named overall champion, with Narangba Valley State High School finishing second and The Lakes College taking third place.

Organisers say the students demonstrated exceptional determination, collaboration and mathematical skills throughout the day.
