International Men’s Health Week will shine a spotlight on the importance of physical and mental wellbeing, encouraging men to take a more proactive approach to their health.

Running from 15 to 21 June, the annual initiative raises awareness around preventable health conditions affecting men and boys, while promoting healthier lifestyles, early intervention and social connection.

Founder of Margate’s Ability in Movement, Connor Liekefett, said many of the major health issues affecting men could often be improved or prevented through regular exercise and healthier habits.

“Cardiovascular disease is the biggest killer of men in this country and it is largely preventable with regular exercise and good health habits,” Connor said. “Often it’s the silent killer of thinking everything is okay, only to find out too late that you could have done something about it in your 30s.”

Connor said regular exercise played an important role in supporting both physical and mental health, with enjoyment and consistency often being the key to long-term success.

“If exercise could be packed into a pill, it would be the most prescribed drug in the world,” Connor said. “There isn’t a single condition or disease that can’t be improved by regular exercise. Enjoyment is the hallmark of adherence.

“If you’re not enjoying what you’re doing, then you’re not going to see it through long enough to see results.”

Community Support and Events

The importance of social connection is also a major focus during International Men’s Health Week, with local groups such as the Caboolture Men’s Shed providing support and companionship for men in the community.

Caboolture Men’s Shed president Dennis Mealin said staying socially connected played an important role in maintaining both physical and mental health, particularly as men get older and experience major life changes.

“Good health is based on many factors, including feeling good about yourself, being productive, contributing to your community, connecting with friends and maintaining an active body and mind,” Dennis said. “Unlike women, most men are reluctant to talk about their emotions and problems and that means that they usually don’t ask for help.”

International Men’s Health Week encourages men to prioritise their physical and mental wellbeing, whether through regular exercise, routine health checks or simply checking in with a mate.
