It’s not just an extraordinary Christmas display – it’s a story of loss, love, hope and community.
While the eye-popping, heart-warming display of Christmas lights at Adrian Street, Caboolture, brings joy to all who behold them, the road to ‘Jingle Street’ began paved in sorrow.
In 1994, Peter and Carolyn Hoffman lived every parent’s worst nightmare when their two-year-old daughter, Samantha Jane, tragically drowned just two days after Christmas. The grief was overwhelming, and for years, the holiday season only amplified their pain.
Peter recalls how he struggled, and it was only through the support of Carolyn and the arrival of their second daughter, Lauren, that he found the strength to cope.
“We always tried to be upbeat, but as soon as December hit, it was really hard,” Peter said.
The family wanted to do something meaningful in memory of Samantha. This eventually became the Christmas light display – a bright and joyful tribute to their beloved Sammy, and a beacon of hope and happiness for everyone.
A Community Tradition That Shines Bright
It began with Peter setting up a few chairs outside to wave and wish passersby a Merry Christmas. The neighbours loved it and stopped by to thank them and share stories. Over time, more lights, decorations and interactive features were added to the Hoffmans’ yard – and it keeps evolving every year.
The Hoffmans sit outside and greet every visitor with warmth and enthusiasm, offering a sense of love, generosity, goodwill, joy, hope and connection.
Peter said Jingle Street has always been about the community, a way to celebrate with neighbours and anyone in need of Christmas cheer.
“We love doing it so much,” he said. “We love seeing the people come through and the big smiles on their faces.”
The Hoffmans like to support a local charity each year. This year, they’re raising funds for Eats 4 The Streets, a local organisation providing meals to people in need.
Visitors to Jingle Street can also bring a few coins to jingle into the Wishing Well to help those doing it tough.
