No sign-up, no cost, no obligation – just men walking and talking together.
With regular walks in Caboolture, Narangba and Beachmere, The Man Walk is a community initiative where men meet to walk together and share conversations in a relaxed, pressure-free environment. Participants have the space to talk openly and discuss challenges they might be facing, with no expectation other than to listen and support each other.
Local resident Stephen Pooler, Manbassador for The Man Walk, said he was inspired to join when he saw The Man Walk CEO, Mark Burns, being interviewed on a morning TV show.
“I was looking for something like this as I’d been part of a similar group that closed,” Stephen said. “I jumped onto the Man Walk website, then started the Caboolture group.
“I’ve been involved in men’s health for a long time as a health and safety manager, mainly in the construction industry. I experienced many times when men struggled with isolation and mental health issues.
“I also had two uncles take their own life. They both suffered from mental health issues.
“I get a lot back on a personal level when I see men help each other.”
Local Walk Locations and How to Join
According to Stephen, it’s all about connection and breaking isolation.
“Men often join without knowing anyone or having many mates – this soon changes as they become part of the group,” he said.
“The walk itself is important – the men don’t have to look at each other while they walk. This makes it easier for them to open up about stuff.
“Often the conversation is about the footy or similar but sometimes someone shares a serious issue. Being able to share a problem is a big benefit.”
What started as a local initiative has now expanded to 88 locations across Australia, with more men joining in each week.
Stephen said that new participants are always welcome.
“Come and give it a go,” he said. “Quite often the first step is the hardest.”
